Prison Island Zanzibar Planning Your Visit 

Prison Island is situated 5.6 km (3.5 mi) from the beaches of Stone town off the main island of Zanzibar.  as this tiny rectangle island is only 800 meters long and 230 meters wide, there are several grounds why you would want to indulge yourself here. The island known as Prison Island after it was purchased by the British first minister of Zanzibar in 1893 who constructed a prison here to replace the deteriorating one in Stone Town which was in poor condition.
